May 17th - on this day in 1966, NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration launched the Gemini-Agena Target Vehicle 5004 (GATV 5004) on an Atlas-SLV3 Agena-D from Cape Kennedy's Launch Complex 14. GATV 5004 was to be used as a docking target for the crewed Gemini 9 mission, but failed to reach orbit after control over the launch vehicle had been lost shortly before Booster Engine Cut-Off (BECO).
