Before he was Senator Kennedy or President Kennedy, JFK was Lieutenant Kennedy of PT-109 (PT = “Patrol Torpedo”) in the Pacific during WWII. On August 1, 1943 Kennedy’s boat was rammed and sunk by a Japanese destroyer. Two of Kennedy's crewmen were killed immediately but Kennedy was able to keep the rest of his men safe behind enemy lines.
