Common buckthorn from Europe (Rhamnus cathartica) and glossy/alder buckthorn from East Asia (Frangula alnus syn. Rhamnus frangula) are considered invasive in most states in the US. The designation of “invasive” comes from individual states and it signifies a plant’s ability to crowd out native plants, spread quickly and negatively impact the ecosystem.
