Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co has begun producing advanced four-nanometer chips for U.S. customers in Arizona, Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo told Reuters, a milestone in the Biden administration's semiconductor efforts.

TSMC's chip foundry in Arizona is not just making one Apple chip, as a second Apple design is reportedly now in production at the facility.

TSMC Arizona has just picked up its second contract from Apple: fab will make SiPs (Systems-in-Package) for Apple Watch, as well as A16 chips for iPhones.

AMD getting Ryzen 9000 series chips is another feather in the Arizona fab’s cap and suggests that confidence in TSMC’s U.S. operations is strong. According to Culpan, the fab is producing about 10,000 wafers a month and, according to plans for Phase 1, will eventually get to 24,000 per month.

TSMC's Fab 21 in Arizona is gradually ramping up production, and recently it began to manufacture some of AMD's Ryzen 9000-series processors for client PCs as well as some ingredients of Apple's S9 system-in-package (SiP) for smart watches,

The news comes in the same week that independent journalist Tim Culpan reported that the chipmaker has secured a second Apple product for production at its Arizona fab, with the previously reported AMD product now being named as the Ryzen 9000, codenamed Grand Rapids.

TSMC agreed to expand its planned investment by US$25 billion to US$65 billion and to add a third Arizona fab by 2030.
