More than 1 million Ohio residents will lose federal food support on Saturday when SNAP benefits expire because of the government shutdown.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture confirmed Sunday that funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, is set to end on Nov. 1. “Bottom line, the well has run dry. At this time, there will be no benefits issued November 1,” the USDA said in a notice published on its website.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program — more commonly known as SNAP, or food stamps — is a key benefits program that serves more than 40 million people across the country. Now, the shutdown is threatening to suspend benefits, raising concerns over where millions of people who rely on the program will turn to for food.

As the federal government shutdown continues, food banks across East Texas are ramping up emergency response efforts to support families who have missed paychecks and are impacted by a potential disruption in SNAP benefits.
