As garbage continues to accumulate across roughly two dozen Bay Area cities impacted by a nationwide Teamsters strike, Republic Services has begun deploying "substitute drivers" in a limited effort to restore trash collection services.

Republic says it has met for a total of 11 days with Teamsters, twice with a federal mediator. The mediator requested both sides return to the table on Tuesday, July 15, and both parties agreed.

Trash pickup has been delayed for several days in Chula Vista and the mayor is demanding action, saying the lack of service is "unfair" to residents.
