The South Rim Fire near Gunnison grew to almost 3,000 acres Saturday morning after its growth and lack of containment forced the closure of Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park on Friday, when it was about 1,
Colorado’s largest lake has that in spades. The west end of Blue Mesa along U.S. 50 has been closed to watercraft for the duration of the Scoopers’ work, giving the planes plenty of room to do their firefighting work — and to put on their show.
The fire has burned 4,227 acres of land. Stuart West, the Superintendent of the park, said only about 12% of the park has burned. However, he said the part that was burned included about 80% of the South Rim, where the heaviest park use is.
Favorable weather helped crews gain ground, but the area remains packed with dry vegetation ready to fuel multiple wildfires.
