After Hurricane Helene devastated Asheville, North Carolina, the sound coming from open car windows as residents gathered on a street at the top of a ridge trying to get cell service last fall was Blue Ridge Public Radio.

Public broadcasters are “at risk” after President Donald Trump moved to cut off federal funding for the Public Broadcasting Service and National Public Radio, but the TV and radio stations plan to fight what they called a “blatantly unlawful” move.

The heads of PBS, NPR and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting have all suggested that Trump’s order is illegal, The AP reports.
