New York was hit with an air quality alert Saturday as smoke from Canadian wildfires drifted across the state, pushing levels of fine particulate pollution into the unhealthy range for sensitive groups.

Officials warned young children and those with respiratory illnesses to take precautions. For weeks, smoke from Canadian wildfires has been drifting across the border.

Wildfire smoke travels with the wind and the forecast calls for a shift in direction tonight, which will improve air quality on Sunday. However, as Canadian wildfires continue to burn, it’s more than likely this will not be our last visit from the smoky conditions this year.
