SYDNEY — Hundreds remained on Bondi Beach long after the sun had set Tuesday. Many stood silently beneath the waning moon, police helicopters whirring overhead. Some laid bouquets of flowers, which local stores were giving out for free. All were there to pay tribute to the 15 people killed at a Hanukkah celebration on Sunday.

Mr Jack Hibbert, who had been in the police force for four months when he was assigned to patrol Bondi Beach, sustained two gunshot wounds – one to his head and another to his shoulder.

Fifteen people were killed and dozens more injured in the Dec. 14 attack that targeted Australia's Jewish community during an event celebrating the first night of Hanukkah.
