Texas House Democrats returned to the Capitol this week, touting their two-week quorum break as a success “beyond their wildest dreams” and pledging to advance the fight against a redistricting bill that could net Republicans five congressional seats in next year’s midterm elections.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott added another piece of legislation to the special session agenda, described as political payback for the House Democrats who fled the state during the first special session.

According to a copy of the letter posted on X by state Rep. Venton Jones, D-Dallas, the total fine is $9,345.25. A spokesman for the House Democratic Caucus confirmed that all of the Democrats who remained absent received the letter.
