U.S. electric vehicle maker Tesla Inc is poised to start selling some Model 3 vehicles made in China equipped with cobalt-free lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, two people familiar with the matter said.

Tesla has already been grappling with slowing sales of its aging lineup as competition has grown rapidly, especially in China and Europe.

Elon Musk’s electric car company said the new versions would start at around $37,000 and $40,000, prices that bring its cars closer to comparable gasoline vehicles.

Tesla Inc said on Monday it would start exporting China-made Model 3 cars to more than 10 European countries this month, joining a growing number of automakers using China as an export hub for electric vehicles.
