SNAP participants in Louisiana will no longer be able to buy certain food items using benefits starting today.

Louisiana SNAP recipients can no longer purchase candy, soda, energy drinks, and gum with their benefits as of Wednesday.

It's part of a growing movement to ban the purchase of sugary drinks and candy with federal food benefits.

The restrictions prohibit the purchase of specific sugar-laden items with Electronic Benefits Transfer cards.
