It was the most prosaic of equipment for the grandest of heists: a ladder, propped right under the noses of French guards. The thieves exited as they entered, through a window, fleeing with nearly all of France’s crown jewels.

The Paris prosecutor said on Sunday that a number of suspects have been arrested over the theft of crown jewels from the Louvre museum in Paris last weekend.
