Kentucky Gov Andy Beshear remembered 19 people killed by a tornado that ripped through the state Friday as children of God and asked for prayers for others injured or displaced by the event

The family's home was picked up and thrown across the street when a tornado ripped through the area, destroying everything they own.

Two days after deadly tornadoes tore through southern Kentucky, devastated communities are beginning the painful process of picking up the pieces.

A reported tornado claimed lives in Laurel County, causing destruction and displacing many. Shelters are open and efforts are underway to help those affected.

Major Leslie Leatherman was responding to emergency calls during the storm when he used his body to shield his wife, who was injured in the storm.

Because of the dark, stormy conditions, Laurel County Fire Department officials are unsure if he knew who he was saving.

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - While some homes are still partially standing after a deadly EF-3 tornado rocked the county on Friday night, others are reduced to rubble. Among those without a home is Alicia Sexton, who lives in the Sunshine Hills Subdivision in Laurel County.

Fire officials say a first responder was found on top of his wife, shielding her from the tornado, and he may have even known it was her.
