The Tarrant County sheriff’s office on Thursday announced its second in-custody death of 2025. A 56-year-old inmate died Tuesday while under medical care at John Peter Smith Hospital, according to a Thursday news release.

A 56-year-old woman who was in the custody of the Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office died Tuesday at a county hospital. According to the sheriff’s office, the inmate died while under medical care at John Peter Smith Hospital and,

Kimberly Phillips, who was identified by the medical examiner’s office, was under medical observation while at the Tarrant County Jail, according to the release. She was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital on Feb. 15 and died three days later “under the direct care of the medical staff,” the release states.

Inmate deaths in Tarrant County are investigated by Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office jail staff, the TCSO Criminal Investigations Division, an outside law enforcement agency, JPS medical staff, The Texas Commission on Jail Standards, the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office and the Texas Attorney General’s Office.

The Tarrant County Sheriff's Office says an inmate died after an attempted suicide over the weekend. According to the sheriff's office, the 36-year-old was booked into the jail on Feb. 4 and died at John Peter Smith Hospital on Feb. 8 "following complications from an attempted suicide."
