Italians Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori retained their mixed doubles title at the U.S. Open on Wednesday, overcoming Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud 6-3 5-7 10-6 in the competition's reimagined format that drew some of the top singles players.

The Italians were given one of them and they showed off their skills in a victory that took just 42 minutes. The shortened format allows the matches to speed by, knowing winning teams would have to play twice on the first day to reach the semifinals and finals on Wednesday night.

Andrea Vavassori took aim at US Open organisers for not allowing doubles players to enter the revamped mixed doubles event after getting a win with Sara Errani on Tuesday. The tournament has been given an overhaul this year, being played over two days in the week before the US Open gets underway.
