The Catholic Church has entered a new historic era with the election of American-Peruvian Robert Francis Prevost as the 267th Supreme Pontiff, who adopted the name Leo XIV, but what has his life and career been like?

Robert Prevost, a missionary who spent his career ministering in Peru and leads the Vatican's powerful office of bishops, was elected the first American pope in the 2,000-year history of the Catholic Church.

After days of waiting, the conclave has elected the newest pope of the Catholic Church on Friday, May 9, at past 1 a.m. in the Philippines. He is Robert Francis Prevost from the United States, now Pope Leo XIV.
