Nissan is considering plans to shut two car assembly plants in Japan and overseas factories, including in Mexico, sources said on Saturday, as part of a cost-cutting plan the company flagged earlier this week.

Nissan Motor Co. plans to close two factories in Japan, as well as locations in four other countries as part of its restructuring and cost-cutting process, the Yomiuri newspaper and other news outlets reported,

The upcoming cuts, part of what the automaker openly called a "recovery plan" dubbed Re:Nissan, would bring its number of plants down from 17 to just 10. Nissan currently has three assembly plants in the US (with 16,000 manufacturing jobs) and one in Mexico.
