Commanders star Bobby Wagner named Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year, honors mother lost to stroke
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Bobby Wagner's mother always told him she believed he would make it to the NFL, encouraging him after her son's firing from the only job he ever had aside from football. The Washington Commanders linebacker lost mom Phenia Mae because of complications following a stroke in May 2009 — she was only 47.
Smith-Njigba is just the sixth wide receiver to ever win Offensive Player of the Year since the award began being handed out in 1972. He joins Justin Jefferson (2022), Cooper Kupp (2021), Michael Thomas (2019), and Jerry Rice (1993 and 1987) as the only receivers to win the award.
Our squad started the evening with five nominations, including Mike Macdonald for Coach of the Year, Klint Kubiak for Assistant Coach of the Year, Jaxon Smith-Njigba for Offensive Player of the Year, Nick Emmanwori for Defensive Rookie of the Year, and Mr. Smith-Njigba again for FedEx Ground Player of the Year.
Despite being nominated for a pair of awards, Aidan Hutchinson left this season’s NFL Honors empty-handed.
