Amazon is reportedly sinking $75 million to their Melania Trump film rather than the initially reported $40 million that was paid for the distribution rights.
Amazon is somehow celebrating Melania‘s opening box office numbers as a success, even though the movie is still down nearly $68 million. Melania earned roughly $7 million on opening weekend, a feat for the documentary genre,
“Melania Trump – born Melanija Knavs – has led an undeniably fascinating life,” said Nick Hilton in The Independent. Raised in a housing complex in what is now Slovenia, she started modelling in her teens, and in the 1990s landed up in the US, where she eventually met Donald Trump.
Experts raised concerns about conflicts of interest about the film being funded by Amazon, which receives federal contracts.
Comedian Laura Benanti reprised her role as the president’s wife, appearing on Wednesday night’s episode to defend Amazon MGM’s Melania. The $75 million documentary opened worldwide last Friday, but has been panned by critics and seen its claims of box office success questioned.
Directed by Rush Hour filmmaker Brett Ratner, Melania opens in theaters nationwide on Friday. The official synopsis for the documentary reads, “ Melania offers unprecedented access to the 20 days leading up to the 2025 Presidential Inauguration — through the eyes of the First Lady herself.
